Men's tennis blanks Bryn Athyn in conference opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a 9-0 shutout over visiting Bryn Athyn College on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-6 overall and sit at 1-0 in the NEAC, while Bryn Athyn falls to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in league play.

Berks cruised to a 3-0 lead during doubles play. Diego Olazagasti and Mostafa Rahmy were 8-0 winners in the No. 1 flight, while Curtis Uhle and Federico Ochoa had an 8-0 triumph at No. 2. Jeremy Heist and Sneh Patel closed out the doubles victories with an 8-1 win in the third flight.

In singles action, Olazagasti defeated Armit Padmanabhan 6-2, 6-0 in the top spot. Rahmy was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 2, while Uhle picked up a point with a 6-1, 6- victory. Ochoa (No. 4) won 6-0, 6-2 and Shane Leaf (No. 5) prevailed 6-0, 6-3. In the tightest match of the day, Heist dropped his first set 6-3 in the No. 6 singles spot. He bounced back with a 6-1 win in the second set and took the tie-breaker by a 10-6 margin.

The Nittany Lions continue NEAC play with a trip to Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. The match will be played indoors at the Hempfield Rec Center in Landisville.
