Softball sweeps Lancaster Bible in conference opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a sweep over Lancaster Bible College on a chilly, windy Thursday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took game one by a score of 8-0 in five innings, followed up by a 7-1 triumph in the second game.

Berks improves to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-0 in NEAC action, while the Chargers fall to 2-16 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In the opener, Jess Rozick tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout to earn her third win of the season. The junior right-hander did not allow until a double with one out in the top of the third inning, which was the only batter to get beyond first base on the day. Rozick struck out nine batters to become the career leader at Berks in strikeouts with 356 and counting.

The Nittany Lions scratched across the first run of the game after a couple of Charger errors got a runner to third base and Hunter Hart scored Heather Rissell with a sacrifice fly to center field. Berks tacked on two runs in the fourth behind a passed ball and a wild pitch on a strikeout that would have ended the inning. In the fifth, Berks got back-to-back runs on bases loaded walks to Cori Dickinson and Brianna Smith. A wild pitch and a error that brought in two runs gave Berks an 8-0 cushion and ended the game due to the mercy rule.

Hart finished the game 2-for-2 with one double, one RBI, and a run scored. Dickinson added a double, one RBI, and two runs scored, while Sophia Cinti and B. Smith both had a hit and a run scored. Becca Faust scored on run and had a stolen base.

In the second game, Val Miller was on top of her game with a complete-game from the pitcher's circle. The junior left-hander matched a career-high with five strikeouts, while scattering three hits and allowing just one run. In addition, Miller recorded four assists and balls hit back to her up the middle.

Hart led off the game with a single to shortstop, but was erased from the bases on a fielder's choice. With two outs, B. Smith roped a double to the warning track in left center field to score Dickinson from third base to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

LBC evened the game at 1-all when Bekah Roberts and Katie Kleinhans delivered back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth inning.

Berks responded in the bottom of the fourth beginning with a single and stolen base by Ashley Malek. Faust drew a walk and Carley Smith loaded up the bases after putting down a perfect bunt on a 1-2 count. Rissell smoked a double down the left field line to bring home Malek and Faust for a 3-1 lead. Hart ripped a double over the left fielder's head to score C. Smith and Rissell to go up 5-1. Dickinson added a two-out RBI single and came around to score on a double to left center by B. Smith to cap off the scoring.

Rissell was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Dickinson went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and one batted in. B. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, and two RBI and Hart was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will host a doubleheader with Keuka College in a rematch of last year's NEAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, April 7. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
