Men's tennis heading back to NEAC Championship

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA - The top-seed Penn State Berks men's tennis team will be making its fourth straight trip to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) title match after defeating No. 4 seed Lancaster Bible College on Friday evening at the Birchwood Tennis Club.

The Nittany Lions have won their seventh consecutive match to improve to 9-6 on the season, while the Chargers drop to 4-8 on the year.

Will Byler and Diego Olazagasti got Berks out to a quick lead with an 8-0 victory at the first doubles bout, while Curtis Uhle and Federico Ochoa followed with an 8-1 triumph at the second spot. Grant Batzer and Shane Leaf had their hands full with Keven Vallette and James Hutchinson in the No. 3 doubles flight. With the match evened at 8-all, Batzer and Leaf emerged with the victory after claiming the tie-break by a 7-1 margin.

In singles play, Olazagasti was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at No. 2 singles to bring Berks within one-point of moving on to the championship round. That spot was solidified when Ochoa finished off his match by a similar 6-1, 6-0 count.

Berks will face off with Penn State Abington for the fourth straight year in the NEAC Championship. Abington won the first two meetings before Berks took the title last season by a score of 6-3. The title game will be played on Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. at the Birchwood Tennis Club. The winner of that match will face off against the winner of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) next weekend with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
