Softball takes two on the road from SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team combined for 21 runs and 35 hits in a sweep of SUNY Cobleskill in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Fighting Tiger Park. The Nittany Lions took the first game 8-0 in six innings and used a late rally for a 13-8 victory in game two.

Berks improves to 17-7-1 on the year and 12-0 in NEAC play, while the Fighting Tigers drop to 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the conference.

Jess Rozick shined in the pitcher's circle all day for the Nittany Lions. In the opener, 13 of the 18 possible outs recorded were strikeouts by Rozick. The junior right-hander scattered five hits and did not allow any runs to record her fifth shutout and 10th complete game of the season. The only trouble that Rozick ran into came in the opening inning after Cobleskill had a walk and back-to-back singles to load the bases with just one out. But Rozick escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts to leave the runners stranded.

The Nittany Lions opened up the scoring with one run in top of the second and four more in the third. They finished off the game with one run in each of the final three frames to end the game in the sixth due to the eight-run rule.

Brianna Smith and Heather Rissell both had solo home runs for Berks. B Smith finished the game 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Rissell was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Hunter Hart and Becca Faust each were 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Ashley Malek and Sophia Cinti both collected two hits.

In the second game, the Fighting Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Berks countered with three in the top of the second, but Cobleskill responded with one in the bottom half to go up 4-3. The two teams exchanged runs in the third before the Nittany Lions put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth to lead 8-5. After Cobleskill evened the game at 8-all, Berks took a 10-8 lead off of a two-run homer by Hart. Cori Dickinson, Malek, and Faust all had an RBI in a three-run seventh to go ahead 13-8.

Val Miller pitched the first 3.1 innings, scattering five hits and surrendering eight runs (three) earned, while striking out three batters. Rozick came on for 3.2 innings of no-hit, shutout relief to earn her 10th victory of the season. Rozick again tallied the majority of the outs, recording six strikeouts for the 11 possible outs during her appearance.

Rozick did it all in game two with a career-best 4-for-5 showing at the plate to go along with two RBI and three runs scored. Faust again finished 3-for-4, adding one double, three RBI, and one run scored. Hart, Miller, B Smith, Dickinson, and Malek all collected a pair of hits. Hart added three RBI and two runs scored, while Dickinson matched a season-high with three runs scored.

The Nittany Lions doubleheader scheduled with SUNY Poly on Sunday, April 22 has been canceled due to poor field conditions. They will return to action with a doubleheader at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, April 25 at 3 p.m.
