Softball picks up a pair of shutouts on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team recorded a pair of shutouts, 2-0 and 3-0, over Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) sweep on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Prior to game one, Ashley Malek and Morgan Omlor were both recognized with Senior Day honors. The pair had their career highlights read aloud while surrounded by family members on the field and receiving gifts from teammates.

The Nittany Lions have now won 17 straight games to improve to 19-7-1 overall and 14-0 in the NEAC, while 13-22 on the season and 5-13 in the conference.

In the first game, Jess Rozick tossed a two-hit shutout, with nine strikeouts and one walk to pick up her 11 win of the season. Rozick allowed only five base runners the entire game, none of which got beyond first base. The junior right-hander has lowered her ERA to 1.31, which is the best in the NEAC.

Hunter Hart had a one-out double to left center and scored on a single by Brianna Smith to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. B Smith had a single in the bottom of the sixth and was lifted for pinch runner Ashley Berry. Berry was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cori Dickinson and came around to score on a double by Becca Faust.

Hart and B Smith both finished 2-for-3, while Omlor and Faust each were 1-for-3.

In the second game, Val Miller had a stellar performance in the pitcher's circle to improve to 7-2 on the year. The junior right-hander scattered three hits in a complete-game shutout, while striking out one and walking one. The Bison were able to get a runner to third base in the first inning, but Miller got out of the jam with a groundout to second base. For the rest of the game, Miller allowed just four base runners, only one reached second base.

Miller helped her own cause at the plate with a one-out single in the bottom of the first. She then stole second base and moved up to third when the catcher's throw went wide of the base. B Smith grounded out to short, but Miller was able to score to make it a 1-0 Berks lead.

In the bottom of the second, Faust singled and Rozick later drew a two-out walk. Heather Rissell delivered a double to center field to bring both runners in and make it a 3-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at the College of Saint Elizabeth on Sunday, April 29 at 12 p.m.
