Women's tennis blanks Penn College for fifth straight win

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team finished off its perfect run through league play with a 9-0 victory over Penn College in the Nittany Lions North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) finale on Friday afternoon.

Berks has now won five straight contests to improve to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats drop to 1-10 on the season and 1-2 in the conference. Berks has won the NEAC Regular Season Championship for the first time since the 2012-13 season, unseating Penn State Abington who has won the regular season crown each of the last four seasons.

The Nittany Lions picked up an 8-3 victory from Caroline Bashore and Laura Youwakim in the No. 1 doubles bout, while Alyssa Miller and Violet Tran were 8-1 winners at the second flight. Tessa Caltagirone and Deismy Jimenez gave Berks the doubles sweep with an 8-0 shutout in the third spot.

In singles action, Bashore (No. 2) won 6-1, 6-1 and Tran (No. 4) picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory to seal the team win for Berks. The remaining matches were eight game pro-sets, with Miller taking the top spot by an 8-4 margin. Caltagirone (No. 5) also won her set 8-4, while Youwakim (No. 3) won 8-3 and Jimenez (No. 6) claimed an 8-0 victory.

The Nittany Lions will enter the NEAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will face off with the No. 4 seed in the semifinal round on Wednesday, April 25 at 6 p.m.
