Softball tops Albright in non-conference action

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team stayed hot at the plate despite going against cold weather and several brief snowfalls in a 7-3 victory over crosstown rival Albright College on Tuesday afternoon. The second game of the doubleheader was called off due to the ongoing snow and cold weather.

The Nittany Lions extended its win streak to 13 straight to improve to 15-7-1 overall, while Albright drops to 10-11 on the season.

The game was played at Berks' home field, but they were the designated visiting team in the boxscore. The Nittany Lions did not waste anytime getting on the scoreboard, putting up a three-spot in the top of the first. Val Miller drew a four pitch walk with one out to get things started. Brianna Smith hit a grounder to the third basemen, whose throw at second sailed wide to allow Miller to advance to third. B Smith then stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out. Cori Dickinson scored Miller with a single through the left side of the infield and moved up to second on the throw to the plate. Ashley Malek drove in B Smith and Dickinson with a single to left field for a 3-0 lead.

Clinging to a 3-1 lead, the Nittany Lions broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth. Hunter Hart led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and Miller single to put runners on the corners. B Smith singled up the middle to score Hart and advance Miller to third base. Ashley Berry pinch ran for B Smith and immediately moved up to second with a stolen base. Miller scored the second run of the inning on a grounder by Dickinson, who was safe at first on the play with the throw pulling the first baseman off the bag. Malek smashed a double to left field to score Berry and Dickinson to make it 7-1 in Berks' favor.

Jess Rozick picked up the win in the pitcher's circle with her complete game effort. She scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned) , while striking out eight in 7.0 innings of work.

Albright got on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning. In the third inning, the leadoff runner reached on an error and the next batter singled. After walk loaded the bases, Rozick got out of the jam with a strikeout to leave three runners stranded. In the sixth inning, Albright started off with back-to-back singles in the fifth, but the next batter grounded to CARLEY SMITH at short, who got the lead runner at third. Rozick then struck out the next two batters to get out of it. In the seventh, the Lions got on a run with an RBI triple and and another on a wild pitch, but Rozick settled down to secure the win.

Malek finished the game 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI, while Dickinson had one hit, scored two runs and drove in two. Hart went 2-for-4 with one rule scored and Miller was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
