Women's tennis topples Abington, 7-2

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team took down Penn State Abington, 7-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

Berks won its third straight contest to improve to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC, while Abington falls ot 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

Berks took control of the match by winning all three of the doubles matches. The No. 3 team of Lucrezia Pulcini and Deismy Jimenez made quick work of their opponents in an 8-2 victory. Caroline Bashore and Laura Youwakim topped the opposition, 8-3, in the No. 1 bout, while Alyssa Miller and Violet Tran had an 8-5 triumph over Stephanie Jin and Fatoumata Cisse at the second spot.

Bashore completed her perfect day with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles, while Tran picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fourth slot. Pulcini (No. 5) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win, while Tessa Caltagirone (No. 6) pulled out a thriller over Isabella Blackwell. Caltagirone took the first set 7-6 after winning the tie-break by a 7-3 margin and finished off the match with a 6-2 win the second set.

The women's tennis program teamed up with the men's tennis squad as well as baseball and softball to host their annual Spring Pink Game. The four teams combined to raise $618.69, all of which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a NEAC contest on Wednesday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
