Softball sweeps Abington in NEAC doubleheader

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball stayed unbeaten in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play after downing Penn State Abington, 6-0 and 9-1, for a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Berks has now won 12 straight games to improve to 14-7-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC South, while Abington drops to 6-14 on the season and 2-4 in the division.

In the opener, Berks took advantage of an error for a run in the bottom of the second and then broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the third. The home squad tacked on one more run with a sacrifice fly in by Hunter Hart to score Heather Rissell, who tripled earlier in the inning, for a 6-0 lead after six.

The way Jess Rozick was pitching, the one run in the second inning was all that was needed to earn the win. The junior right-handed broke her own school record for strikeouts after recording 16 of the games 21 outs with a punchout. Rozick, who struck out 15 two years ago against Lancaster Bible College, recorded the first eight outs of the game with a strikeout.

She ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth, after the leadoff batter reached on a Berks error. After a pair of walk loaded the bases, Rozick was able to escape the trouble by forcing a pop up to third base. In the sixth, Abington threatened again with a single and walk, followed by a passed ball to put runners on second and third. But again Rozick left them stranded, this time recording a strikeout to end the inning. Rozick capped off the game by striking out the side to secure the victory. Her final line from the game was just two hits allowed as she earned her fourth shutout and 11th complete game of the season.

Val Miller had a career-high three hits to go along with a stolen base and a scored a run, while Becca Faust was 2-for-3 with with a double and a run scored. Hart and Cori Dickinson both chipped in two hits and scored a run. Ashley Malek went 1-for-2 with a double, one run scored, and drove in a run.

In the nightcap, Miller matched Rozick in the pitcher's circle with just two hits allowed to pick up the win. Miller struck out four batters and issued just one walk, while surrendering one run in five innings of work. Abington recorded a one-out in the first inning before Miller retired the next batters she faced.

The offense started out strong with a single by Hart and RBI double two batters later by Brianna Smith in the bottom of the first. Berks bumped up its lead to 5-0 after putting up a four spot with fifth straight hits in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Miller singled, stole second and scored on a single by B Smith. She moved up to third on a double by Dickinson and scored off a single by Malek. Dickinson was driven home with a single by Faust, while Malek advanced to third on a hit by Carley Smith and scored during an error on the play.

Abington got a run in the top of the fourth after Kourtney Schneider walked and scored from first on a triple by Becca Dougherty. Berks responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rissell and Hart had back-to-back singles and the duo came around to score on a single by Miller.

In the bottom of the fifth, Malek led off with a triple and scored on a single by Faust. C Smith followed with a single and pinch hitter Lauren Gabel finished off the game with an RBI single to score Faust and put the mercy rule into effect.

The softball program teamed up with the men's and women's tennis squad as well as baseball to host their annual Spring Pink Game. The four teams combined to raise $618.69, all of which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will face crosstown foe Albright College in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday, April 16 at 3 p.m.
