Men's tennis tops Abington for fourth straight win

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team earned a hard fought 7-2 victory over Penn State Abington in a North Easter Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

Berks picked up its fourth consecutive win to improve to 6-6 overall and 3-0 in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 3-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

Berks jumped out to a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles bouts. The duo of Will Byler and Diego Olazagasti grabbed an 8-4 win over Michael Litz and Brandon Zweiback in the No. 1 flight, while Curtis Uhle and Federico Ochoa won by the same score in the second spot over Ilker Erkut and Youssef Omar. The No. 3 team of Grant Batzer and Shane Leaf had their backs against the wall, trailing 7-4 with Abington needing just one more game to earn the win. But Batzer and Leaf battled back en route to a thrilling 9-7 victory.

In singles action, Olazagasti earned a point at the No. 2 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Erkut, while Uhle had a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Zweiback at the third slot. Ochoa (No. 4) and Leaf (No. 6) both won their singles matches by a 6-1, 6-1 margin.

The men's tennis program teamed up with the women's tennis squad as well as baseball and softball to host their annual Spring Pink Game. The four teams combined to raise $618.69, all of which will benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will host the College of Saint Elizabeth in a NEAC tilt on Wednesday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
