Men's and women's tennis compete at USTA complex

ORLANDO, FL - The Penn State Berks men's and women's tennis teams have competed at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus during the annual spring break trip.

The men dropped an 8-1 decision to Otterbein University on Sunday afternoon. They opened up Monday morning with a 7-2 setback to Roosevelt University, before falling 9-0 to Ave Maria University under the lights on Monday evening.

Will Byler grabbed the lone point against Otterbein, after picking up a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles. Federico Ochoa pulled out a thrilling win at No. 5 singles versus Roosevelt. Ochoa won the first set 7-6 after taking the tie-break by score of 7-4 and followed with a 6-4 triumph in the second set to clinch the win. Grant Batzer defeated his opponent from Roosevelt at No. 6 singles by set scores of 6-1, 6-3.

On the women's side, Berks was topped 9-0 by Otterbein on Sunday. The Nittany Lions bounced back with a 7-2 victory over Roosevelt, before falling 6-3 to Ave Maria later that day.

In the victory over Roosevelt, Caroline Bashore and Laura Youwakim edged their opposition at No. 1 doubles by an 8-6 margin. Alyssa Miller and Violet Tran earned an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Lucrezia Pulcini and Deismy Jimenez were 8-0 winners at the third flight. Bashore picked up a win at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2) and Youwakim followed with a point at the third spot (6-0, 6-0). Pulcini (No. 5) and Tessa Caltagirone (No. 6) were both 6-0, 6-0 winners give Berks its final two points of the match.

Berks won by default for two of its points against Ave Maria. Miller and Tran picked up the other point with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Bashore and Youwakim battled in the top doubles bout, but were edged by a 9-7 margin. In singles action, Youwakim suffered a 6-4, 7-5 setback out of the second spot, while Caltagirone was nipped 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 5.

The men and women have off on Tuesday, March 6 before continuing the trip on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Morningside College. The teams will finish off the trip against Regis College on Thursday, March 8 at 12:30 p.m.
