Softball splits on second day of spring trip

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team took a 13-4 loss against Muskingum University to start the day, but rebounded nicely with a thrilling 2-1 win over Heidelberg University to salvage a split on the second day of the D9 Sunkissed Games on Monday afternoon.

In the opener, Muskingum tallied three runs a piece in each of the first three innings to jump out to a 9-0 lead. Cori Dickinson drove in Jess Rozick in the bottom of the third inning to get the Nittany Lions on the board. Dickinson struck again in the bottom of the fifth, this time smacking a two-run home run to score Hunter Hart and fend off the eight run rule. In the bottom of the seventh, Heather Rissell delivered an RBI single to score Dickinson to add the final run of the contest.

Dickinson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI to go along with the first homer of her collegiate career. Hart went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Rissell was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Abby Files had a 1-for-3 showing at the plate.

After a tough opener, Rozick battled back with a magnificent effort against Heidelberg. She ran into trouble in the opening inning with runners on second and third with just one out, but Rozick worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts to leave the runners stranded. The junior right-hander ran into a similar situation in the third inning with runners on second and third and one out. Again, Rozick won the fight with a pair of strikeouts to keep HU off the board.

In the top of the fourth, the Berks offense got rolling with the help of a leadoff single by Ashley Malek. Becca Faust later provided a one-out double to left field to put both runners in scoring position. Rissell followed with a double to center field to score Malek and Faust and give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 advantage. Morgan Omlor added a single, but Heidelberg was able to escape with no further damage.

HU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with a bunt single by Kaylie Rowland to score Haylee Patel from third base. Rozick got the next two batters out in the fourth inning, leaving a runner stranded on second base.

Rozick tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth and again in the sixth inning with the help of a pair of strikeouts. After Berks went down in order in the top of the seventh, Rozick was set to face the bottom of the HU lineup. The first batter in the inning was a pinch hitter, which Rozick forced to pop out to third base for out number one. She struck out the second batter and then got a pop up to shortstop to seal the game.

Malek, Faust, and Rissell all finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate, with both of Rissell's hits going for doubles. Omlor and Sophia Cinti each collected one hit in the game.

Rozick scattered six hits and allowed one run, while striking out 10 batters in seven innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will have the day off tomorrow before returning to action with two games on Wednesday, March 7. They will face Rhodes College at 1:30 p.m., followed by Aurora University at 3:45.
