Nittany Lions open up Florida trip with split

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the 2018 season with a 2-1 setback to Westminster College, but bounced back with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over Bluffton University on Sunday afternoon at the D9 Sunkissed Games in Florida. Jess Rozick and Val Miller both turned in phenomenal performances from the pitcher's circle.

In the opener against Westminster, the Nittany Lions (1-1) got on the board in the top of the first inning. Rozick, who reached base on a catcher's interference, scored all the way from first base on a double down the right field line by senior Ashley Malek. The Titans responded with a run of their own in their half of the opening inning.

The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth, when Alexa Owrey doubled to left field to score Nicole Anderson, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Rozick finished the game with four hits, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out five batters and issued two walks. Jazmyn Rohrer limited the Berks offense to two hits and one unearned run, while striking out seven and walking two in a complete game victory.

Malek led the offensive effort by going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a double.

In the victory over Bluffton, Miller scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in 7.0 strong innings of work. She struck out four batters and walked three en route to picking up her first win of the season.

The Beavers got on the board with one run in the top of the third inning, but the damage could have been worse. BU put runners on second and third with two outs, when Caylin Morstadt delivered a single to right field. The lead runner scored with ease, but the runner on second was thrown out at the plate on a throw from Malek to Miller.

After being held in check through the first five innings, the Nittany Lions finally busted things open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cori Dickinson led off the inning with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Ashley Berry. Berry stole second base to get into scoring position and came around to score after Sophia Cinti roped a double to left field to even the score at 1-1. Cinti scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single to right field by Becca Faust, who advanced two bases on an error. Heather Rissell grounded out to shortstop, but was able to score Faust from third base to add an insurance run and up the Berks lead to 3-1.

The Nittany Lions continue their spring break trip with a pair of games on Monday, March 5. They will face Muskingum University at 1:30 p.m., followed by Heidelberg University at 3:45.
