Softball wins a pair of one-run thrillers over Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a much needed sweep with a pair of thrilling wins by scores of 2-1 and 3-2 over Swarthmore College in non-conference action at Clothier Field.

Jess Rozick and Becca Faust picked up the victories from the pitcher's circle after both tossed solid complete-game efforts in the two contests.

In the opener, Sophia Cinti had a one-out single and advanced to second on a passed ball. She came around to score on a double by Cori Dickinson to give the Nittany Lions (4-7-1) a 1-0 lead after their first at bat.

Berks added to its lead in the top of the third inning with Ashley Malek starting things off with a one-out double to left field. Dickinson moved Malek up to third on a ground out and Brianna Smith drove her home with an RBI single up the middle.

Rozick did not allowed only one base runner through the first three innings. The Garnet (10-4) got their first hit of the game with a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth by Kennedy Kings. She moved up to second base on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Berks error to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

Swarthmore got the leadoff batter on in the fifth and moved her up to second with a sacrifice bunt, but Rozick got back-to-back strikeouts to leave the runner stranded at second. The Garnet had a single and a double to put runners on second and third with one out and Berks intentionally walked the next batter to load up the bases. The next batter popped up to Faust at second base, who was able double off the runner at third after she took off on contact.

Rozick allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh before fielding a comebacker and throwing to first for the final out of the game. The junior right-hander scattered five hits and allowed one unearned run, while striking out seven batters and walking two.

Berks went down in order to start the second game and the Swarthmore offense struck early in their half of the first. Marit Vike led off with a bunt single and Gabriella Natoli reached on an infield single. Kings followed with a drive off the fence in center field to plate both runners and give the Garnet a 2-0 lead with a runner on second and no outs. Faust settled in and got three straight ground outs to escape any further damage.

The Nittany Lions got a run back in the top of the second inning with B. Smith singling to right and Carley Smith adding single to center field. With two outs, Heather Rissell singled through the left side of the infield and B. Smith was able to come around from second to score.

Swarthmore got the first two batters on with singles and moved them both into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth. Faust forced a ground out to short and a ground out to second to leave both runners stranded.

Mackie Caffrey led off the fifth inning with a single to right field and was bunted over to second by Hunter Hart and then to third on a single by Cinti. Swarthmore got the first out with a caught stealing, but Malek smacked a double down the right field line to score Caffrey and knot the game at 2-all. Dickinson drove in Malek with a between third and short to go up 3-2.

Faust allowed only one base runner over the final three frames to secure the victory. She scattered eight hits and allowed two runs on the way to her first complete game of the season.

Cinti, Malek, Dickinson, and B. Smith all finished the second game with two hits.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in the NEAC opener for both teams on Wednesday, April 4. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
