Softball battles Alvernia to extras in both games of doubleheader

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team and nearby foe Alvernia University went to extra innings in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Golden Wolves scratched out a 1-0 win in eight innings in the opener and the teams played to a 5-5 tie, which was halted after nine innings due to darkness.

In the opener, both pitcher's gave a phenomenal effort and each teams offense squandered the few scoring opportunities that were created. The Golden Wolves left a runner stranded on third in the first inning, while Berks left runners on the corners in the third inning. Alvernia got a lead off double in the fourth inning and advanced the runner to third, but could not push across a run. In the bottom half of the inning, Ashley Malek led off with a double and moved up to third, but she too was left stranded.

Morgan Omlor collected her second hit off the day in the fifth inning and Jess Rozick followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Hunter Hart hit a grounder to shortstop, who tried to get pinch runner Mackie Caffrey at third, but she got back in time to load up the bases. Alvernia pitcher Riley Shields got out of the jam with a pop out to first base.

In the eighth using international tie-breaker rules, the leadoff batter moved up the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt. Following a walk, Shields blooped a ball into shallow right to score the lone run of the game. Berks moved the runner up to third to start its half of the inning, but were not able to bring her home with the tying run.

Rozick allowed five hits and allowed just one run (unearned), while striking out five batters in eight innings of work. Shield scattered six hits and struck out two in eight scoreless innings pitched.

Omlor finished a team-best 2-for-3, while four other batters each had one hit.

Alvernia struck with the first three runs of game two with the help of several Berks errors. The Nittany Lions got a run back in the bottom of the third when Rozick roped a single down the right field line and scored on a double to right center by Malek. Becca Faust led off the fourth inning with a double and Heather Rissell followed with a walk. Two batters later, Caffrey smacked a three-run home run to left center field to give Berks a 4-3 lead.

The Golden Wolves knotted the game at 4-all with a two-out single through the right side of the infield by Alyssa Acker in the top of the sixth inning. Both teams got a runner aboard with a hit, but they were left on the basepath in the seventh inning.

Again going to international tie-break, Alvernia used a sacrifice to move the runner up and then got a double to take a 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Berks was unable to move the runner up with a sacrifice, but Faust came through huge with a double to left center to score Cori Dickinson with a the tying run.

After moving the runner up with a sacrifice in the top of the ninth, Alvernia tried to squeeze the runner home with a bunt. But Rozick fielded the ball and quickly flipped home to Malek to nail the runner at the plate. Berks again was unable to move the runner up and the hot hitting Rozick drew a walk with two outs, but the Alvernia pitcher then got a groundout to get out of the jam. With darkness setting in, the game was called to a 5-all draw.

Val Miller got the start in the circle for Berks, surrendering 10 hits and allowing five runs (one earned). Rozick came on and tossed 1.2 innings of no-hit relief. Kayla Andrews gave up two runs on five hits in the first three innings of the game. Nicole August tossed the final six innings of the game, allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out four.

Rozick went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Malek and Faust each were 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Swarthmore College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m.
