MBB downed in first round of Widener Tip-Off Tournament

CHESTER, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team fell to host Widener University, 80-51, in the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness Tournament on Friday evening at the Schwartz Center.

The Nittany Lions trailed 42-21 at halftime, but were able to cut their deficit down to 13 points midway through the second half. The Pride, however, would not allow the lead to slip away any farther as they finished quickly pushed their lead back up.

Latrell Carroll led the Berks after notching the second double-double of his young career. The freshman forward recorded 18 points and 14 rebounds to go along with two assists, one steal, and one blocked shot. Through four games this season, Carroll is averaging 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.

Matt Seip chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, followed by Rene Alexandre with seven points. Steve Luchansky grabbed seven boards and dished out a team-high three assists, while Monty Farmer dished out two assists.

Tyler Drews led Widener in scoring with 15 points, followed by Pat Holden with 14 and Kenny Lewis with 12. Jalen Howard had a team-best five rebounds for the Pride.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn State Harrisburg in the consolation round on Saturday, November 17 at 2 p.m. Penn State Harrisburg fell by a score of 86-77 to Gwynedd Mercy University early in the night on Friday.
