Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Epic comeback leads men’s soccer to draw with Penn College

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – With playoff hopes dashed and facing a 4-0 deficit at halftime, the Penn State Berks men's soccer team could have phoned things in. But they had one thing to play for down the stretch, pride. And that is what they played with as they overcame the deepest deficit in program history en route to a 4-4 draw with Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Friday night.

The Nittany Lions four-goal deficit extended well beyond halftime. It was not until the 68:02 mark of the contest until they got onto the board when Tom Ulrich, playing in the last game of his collegiate career, put home a penalty kick.

Then Brenden Valverde showed off his powerful leg when he drove a free kick into the back of the net from 30-yards out in the 76th minute to make it a 4-2 deficit.

And then at 85:32, Cameron Yost played a ball from the midfield that Valverde dribbled around the keeper and put into the net to make it 4-3.

As the momentum shifted entirely toward Berks, the toughest opponent was now the clock. With time winding down, the Nittany Lions got a throw-in deep in their attacking zone. Valverde's initial throw-in was knocked deeper down the line. His next throw went into the box and Tyler Brown came flying in and drove into the underside of the crossbar and into the net to even the game at 4-all at 88:41 in the game.

In the first overtime, the Wildcats had one shot and four corner kicks, but Trent Johnson and the Nittany Lions were there to thwart any scoring chances.

The second overtime saw Berks on the attacking end more. Luke Romanoski had two shots, while Josh Rios saw a breakaway shot slam off the hands of the keeper in the 107th minute. The final shot of the match was far off target by Penn College in the 109th minute and the game finished in a draw.

Johnson finished the game with six saves for the Nittany Lions, while Hunter Gosnell and Brendan Skwirut combined on seven stops for the Wildcats.

Gerardo Sosa, who started in net, and Ulrich played the final games of their careers for the Nittany Lions. Sosa will go down as one of the top goalkeepers in program history as he is the all-time leader in wins (19) and shutouts (8), while ranking among the top-10 in saves (154), save percentage (.664), and goals against average (2.14). Ulrich is the program record holder in games started (74) and minutes played (6,294), while his 74 games played are the second most. The duo has been part of the winningest stretch in program-history, as the Nittany Lions have won 32 games overall, 26 in the NEAC, and made the postseason three times.

The loss of Sosa and Ulrich will be tough, but the Nittany Lions will look toward their returners and incoming players to make a return to the NEAC Postseason in 2019.
