Women's basketball picks up crucial win over Bryn Athyn

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team cleaned up its play in the middle quarters to earn an 83-72 victory over visiting Bryn Athyn College in a Saturday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest.

Bryn Athyn claimed a 15-14 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to a basket in the final seconds of the period. They expanded their lead to five points (24-19) with 6:11 left in the second quarter. Berks then used an 18-6 run to take a seven point lead (37-30) into the halftime break. The Nittany Lions (6-9, 4-6 NEAC) continued their stellar play out of the break, opening up the third period on a 14-3 run to build an 18-point cushion. The lead remained in double-digits for Berks heading into the fourth quarter leading 62-47. Bryn Athyn closed the gap in the fourth quarter, but never got any close than 10 points down.

The Nittany Lions had five players score in double figures, led by Kylie Herman with 22 points. The sophomore guard also notched six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Deanna Daddona, who drained four 3-pointers, followed with 17 points, three assists, and four boards. Abbie Carr notched the first double-double of her career after recording 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Sam Brensinger, who recorded five of her game-high six steals in the second quarter, finished with 11 points, followed by Jennifer Martin with 10.

Zeniyah Sanders led the Lions with 17 points and 12 boards, while Clayshonia Cogmon added 16 points and eight rebounds. Myah Phillips added 14 points and five steals.

Berks is currently tied for third place in the South Division standings with Gallaudet University. Both teams have a 4-4 division record, they are followed by the College of Saint Elizabeth in fifth place with a 3-5 record.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC South Division contest on Wednesday, January 31 at 8 p.m. The women's squad will team up with the men to host the annual Pink Game fundraiser.
