Men's tennis tops Albright, 8-1, in fall opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team opened up the 2017-18 season with an 8-1 victory over Albright College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a commanding lead after winning all three of the doubles bouts. The No. 1 duo of Mostafa Rahmy and Diego Olazagasti earned an 8-2 win over Dyland Okonski and Noah Jessie, while the third pair of Federico Ochoa and Jeremy Heist grabbed an 8-1 triumph. The tightest match of the doubles set came at the second flight, where Will Byler and Grant Batzer battled their way to an 8-6 victory over Dylan Rutt and Zach Schultheis.

In singles action, Berks earned the win in five of the six matches. Rahmy cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3, while Heist was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the fifth spot. Olazagasti (No. 2) won by set scores of 6-1, 6-3 and Ochoa (No. 4) won by a 6-3, 6-4 margin. In the No. 6 slot, Shane Leaf and David Sylvester had a three set thriller. Leaf won the first set 6-2, but Sylvester evened it up with a 6-4 win in the second. The tie-breaker remained close with Leaf prevailed on top with a 10-7 win. Albright's lone point came from a three set win by Okonski over Byler at the top singles flight. Byler took the first set 6-4, but Okonski rallied with a 6-2 win in the second set and grabbed the tie-break by a 10-3 margin.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference match on Saturday, September 30 at 1 p.m.
