Women's tennis falls to Alvernia in season opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team opened up the 2017-18 season with a 6-3 setback to nearby Alvernia University in a non-conference match at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts on Monday afternoon. (Boxscore)

The Nittany Lions were spotted a 2-0 lead after Alvernia forfeited at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The other win captured by the Nittany Lions came at the No. 2 doubles spot from Lucrezia Pulcini and Violet Tran. The duo jumped out to an early lead and held on late for an 8-5 win over Alivia Lopez and Leah Kemper.

The Golden Wolves won all five of the singles matches that they had a person playing in to win the match. But Berks put up a fight as its No. 3, 4, 5 players all took their matches to three sets. Tessa Caltagirone (No. 3) dropped her first set 6-3, but bounced by with a 6-4 triumph in the second set. Caltagirone was then edged 10-7 in the tie-breaker. Deismy Jimenez (No. 4) fell 7-5 in the first set, picked up a 6-2 win in the second, before dropping the tie-breaker 10-5. Alexis Gallagher (No. 5) followed the same path as Caltagirone and Jimenez, dropping the first set 6-3, winning the second set 6-2, and then dropping the tie-break 10-7.

The Nittany Lions will play Albright College on Wednesday, September 20 at 3:30 p.m. in their final match of the fall season.
