JENKINTOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team split its final regular season doubleheader of the season with Penn State Abington on Monday afternoon, but the split was enough to earn Berks a spot in the NEAC Tournament next weekend. Berks had its rally in the seventh come up short in a 7-5 setback in game one and then jumped out to a big lead ing game two and held off Abington for a 7-4 win.

Berks moves to 17-19 on the year and 10-6 in the NEAC, while Abington now sits at 15-21 overall and 11-3 in the conference.

In the second game, the two teams combined 19 walks (Berks-12, Abington-7) and 26 runners left on base (Berks-7, Abington-19). Dalton Hughes got things going right away for Berks with a solo home run to right field in the first inning. Abington evened it up with in the top of hte second after three walks loaded the bases and a hit batter forced in a run.

In the bottom of the third, Abington loaded up the bases with no outs. Starting pitcher Tyler Comport got a strikeout, followed by a grounder to short that went to home for the force and out number two. Comport left the runners stranded with a strikeout looking to escape the jam.

The Berks offense then went to work in the top half of the fourth inning. John McGarvey smacked a one-out home run to put Berks ahead 2-1. Dylan Gallagher was hit by a pitch, Pearce Harhigh followed with a bunt single, and Austin Madeja was walked to load up the bases. Troy Salerno delivered a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Gallagher from third. A walk to Cory Fox loaded the bases back up and Hughes sent a bases clearing double to center field to bring all three runs in and put Berks up 6-1.

Abington chipped away at its deficit with two runs in the fifth, but again left bases loaded with a strikeout looking to end the inning by reliever Steven Varner. Abington made it a 6-4 with a two-out double in the sixth, before the last out was recorded with a strikeout by Mitch Renninger that stranded three more runners on the bases.

Berks was able to get a little more breathing room with an RBI double by McGarvey to score Toby Welk that brought the game to 7-4.

Renninger worked around two bases runners in the seventh and left one on base in the eighth, along with the help of McGarvey gunning down a runner on a stolen base attempt. In the bottom of the ninth, Abington had its leadoff man on with a walk and the next batter singled to center field. Renninger then forced a fly out to right and a pop up to first base. The senior then secured his third save of the season after getting a strikeout swinging.

Hughes was a triple shy of the cycling after going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. McGarvey was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Welk went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

In the first game, Berks got on the board in the top of the first when Welk singled through the left side to plate Hughes from second base.

Abington broke through with five runs in the bottom of the third with four hits, two walks, and two Berks miscues in the field. Berks got added another run in the fifth behind a double by Welk that brought in Fox.

In the top of the seventh and trailing 7-2, Berks started the inning off with a walk and three straight singles. Welk and Zach Reis had back-to-back RBI singles and McGarvey reached on a fielder's choice that brought in another run to make it 7-5 with one out and two runners on. But Abington starting pitcher Diego Melendez got a fly out to right and pop out to first to end the rally.
