Baseball season draws to a close at NCAA Regional tournament

HARTWICH, MASS - The Penn State Berks baseball team had its 2017 campaign draw to a close after suffering a 12-4 setback to Salve Regina University in a consolation bracket game at Whitehouse Field on Friday afternoon in the NCAA New England Regional Tournament.

The Nittany Lions finish the season with an overall record of 19-21 and will say goodbye to eight seniors, including a core group of four-year players that achieved something no other players in program history have achieved. Dylan Gallagher, Zach Reis, Mitch Renninger, and Troy Salerno were members of three NEAC titles and made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament. During the quartets time here, the Nittany Lions had an overall record of 84-74, 40-22 in conference and 3-8 at the NCAA Tournament.

The Seahawks opened up the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. But Berks answered right back in their half of the opening frame, with Cory Fox singling to start the inning and moving up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Hughes. Toby Welk followed with a 2-run home run over the fence in left field to even the game up at 2-all. The homer was Welk's team-leading fifth of the season.

Reis, who got the start on the mound, recorded a strike out and an inning ending double play to face the minimum amount of batters in the second inning and worked out of a jam of two runners on base in the third. In the top of the fourth, SRU was able to plate three runs on three hits to go ahead 5-2.

Brandon Griesemer came on in relief in the fourth and recorded a strike out and ground out to third base to leave runners stranded on second and third. In the bottom of the inning, Fox led off with an infield single and moved up to second on a stolen base and two batters later Welk was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs. Griesemer added a line drive single to right to bring in Fox and John McGarvey laced a single to left to bring in Welk, cutting the Berks deficit to 5-4.

The Seahawks responded with two runs each in the sixth and seventh and pulled away late with three more runs in the top of the ninth.

Fox led the offensive attack for Berks after going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Welk was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Welk finishes his sophomore year batting .400 and set the single-season school record with 66 hits, surpassing the previous high of 63 recorded by Tyler Fleischut in 2010. Griesemer, McGarvey, Salerno, and Reis all recorded a hit in Friday's game.

Along with the group of four-year standouts, Berks will see the careers of McGarvey, Matt Korea, Ryan Tenney, and Steven Varner. The group will be sorely missed and tough to replace, but the future still looks bright for the Nittany Lions with the incoming recruiting class and student-athletes set to return next season.
