Baseball outlasts Abington in 11 innings, heading to seventh straight NEAC title game

LEWISBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team outlasted Penn State Abington, 9-8, in an 11-inning marathon game on Saturday afternoon at Depew Field on the campus of Bucknell University to earn its seventh consecutive trip to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) title game. The Nittany Lions will face Penn College in the championship game on Sunday, May 14 at 10 a.m. with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

The game was halted on Friday evening before the start of the top of the seventh inning with game deadlocked 3-all. Play resumed on Saturday afternoon and Berks wasted little time getting on the board with a 3-spot in their first at-bats.

Zach Reis had a one-out double to left field and moved up to third on an error that allowed John McGarvey to reach first. After a walk to Mason Pennypacker loaded the bases, the shortstop was unable to handle a grounder by Seth Endy to bring in Reis and McGarvey to home. Later in the inning, Endy and Austin Madeja pulled off a double steal and Endy then scored on a wild pitch to give Berks a 6-3 lead.

Abington got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh to make it 6-4, but Berks was again able to take advantage of walks and miscues to add a run. Dalton Hughes led off with a single, but was erased from the base path's with a fielder's choice that put Toby Welk on first. McGarvey drew a walk with two outs, and Pennypacker and Endy were both plunked by a pitch to force in Welk from third to make it 7-4 Berks in the top of the eighth.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when Abington rallied for three runs to tie it at 7-all. Abington had the winning run on second base with just one out, but Mitch Renninger got a ground out to third and struck out the last batter looking to send the game to extras.

Berks put its first two runners on base in the 10th, but they were unable to push across any runs. Renninger then set the batters down in order in the bottom half of the frame.

Senior Troy Salerno kicked off the top of the 11th with a triple into the right field corner, his first three-bagger of the season. Cory Fox followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Salerno. Hughes got the offense started back up with a single and moved to second off a balk. Reis delivered an RBI single to center to extend the lead to two at 9-7.

In the bottom of the 11th, Abington led off the inning with a walk, but Renninger got the next batter looking for the first out. The following batter reached on a fielder's choice, but Berks got the lead out at second base. Back-to-back singles to pull within one run and with runners on first and second base. Renninger was able to secure the win and send Berks to the title game with a strikeout looking to end the contest.

Hughes finished the game 3-for-6 with two runs scored, while Fox was 2-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, and one stolen base. Reis and McGarvey both recorded two hits, one RBI, and one runs scored.

Tyler Comport got the start on the mound and threw all six innings during the Friday portion of the game. He scattered five hits and allowed three runs (one earned), while striking out three batters. Renninger chucked five innings of relief to earn the win. The senior right-hander surrendered seven hits and five runs (four earned), with three strikeouts, all of which were looking.

The Nittany Lions will face Penn College in a rematch of the 2015 NEAC Championship, which the Wildcats won.
