Berks topped by Abington in regular season finale

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team fell, 9-0, to Penn State Abington in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) regular season finale on Wednesday afternoon at Hillcrest Racquet Club.

Abington improves 7-5 on the year and 6-0 in the NEAC, while Berks falls to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Abington now finishes as the NEAC Regular Season champion and Berks is runner-up.

The No. 2 doubles duo of Laura Youwakim and Lucrezia Pulcini had the hardest fought battle for Berks, but ultimately fell 8-6 to Janie Saile and Stephanie Jin.

In singles action, it was Youwakim and Pulcini who had the best showings once again. At No. 4 singles, Youwakim won 7-5 in the first set before dropping the second set 6-4. She was then topped 10-6 by Phung in the super tie-breaker. Pulcini also claimed a 7-5 win in the opening set and dropped the next by the same score. She battled until the very end, falling 10-8 to Saile in the tie-breaker.

Berks will face No. 3 seed Lancaster Bible College in the semifinal round of the NEAC Tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Birchwood Tennis Courts in Clarks Summit, Pa. The winner will square off with Penn State Abington in the NEAC Championship on Saturday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
