Softball sweeps Penn State Abington on the road

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team swept Penn State Abington by scores of 1-0 and 13-3 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Huntingdon Park.

Berks upped its winning streak to 17 straight to improve to 21-7 overall and 15-1 in the NEAC South, while Abington falls to 15-15 on the year and 9-7 in the conference.

In the opener, Val Miller tossed a one-hit, shutout in her finest performance of the season. The sophomore, left-hander retired the batters in order in the first two innings, before surrendering a leadoff single in the bottom of the third. The runner moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third base on a wild pitch with just one out. Miller escaped the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to short to leave the runner stranded on third. Miller did not allow another base runner the rest of the game as she retired the final 14 batters she faced, including the final two outs of the third inning.

Morgan Omlor got the offense going when she crushed a leadoff double to left center. Miller moved her up to third base with a sacrifice bunt and Madison Newhouser drove in Omlor with the only run of the game with a single to center field.

In the second game, Berks' offense belted 18 hits, six of which were doubles. Ashley Malek set a single-game program high by going 5-for-5 at the plate, to go along with two RBI, two runs scored, and two doubles, while Heather Rissell finished 4-for-4 with four RBI, one run scored, one stolen base, and two doubles. JENNA HEFFNER was 4-for-5 with two runs batted in, three runs scored, and two doubles. Newhouser had a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Miller had one strike in one inning of work and Jessica Rozick picked up the win with one hit allowed and five strikeouts in 6.0 scoreless innings of relief.

After the game one victory, head coach Donna Ference earned her 100th career victory. She was the quickest coach to reach the 100 win milestone in Berks history and now sits at a record of 101-36 in her fourth year at the helm.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
