Gallagher's 3-hit shutout helps Berks to split with Keuka

READING, PA - Dylan Gallagher turned in a 3-hit, complete-game, shutout and the offense scored in bunches in the middle innings to lead the Penn State Berks baseball team to a 12-0 victory in the second game to salvage a split against Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Wolves were able to claim the first game by a score of 6-4.

The Nittany Lions move to 11-15 overall and 5-3 in the NEAC, while the Wolves now stand at 10-11 on the season and 3-1 in the conference.

In the second game, Gallagher went the distance for his finest pitching performance of his career. The right-hander struck out a season-high five batters, while walking just two batters. He improves to 2-1 on the year with a 4.02 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 31.1 innings pitched.

Gallagher started out the game with a perfect first inning, before surrendering a leadoff double in the top of the second. The next batter grounded out to move the runner up to third, but he was left stranded as Gallagher got a line out to center field and a ground out to short. In the top of the third, Keuka had runners on the corner with just one out, but Gallagher forced a 4-6-3 inning ending double play to escape unharmed. The top of the fourth inning began with a hit batter, who then moved to second on a passed ball and up to third a wild pitch with no outs. With the infield moved in, Gallagher got a one-hopper to second for out No. 1, struck out the next batter looking, and then a ground out to short to escape the jam to leave the game scoreless at the time.

Berks fed off the momentum of holding Keuka off the board by putting up a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Toby Welk led off the inning with a triple to right center field, nearly the same exact spot as his triple in game one, and came in to score when Zach Reis laced a single down the right field line. Tyler Comport drew a walk and John McGarvey laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt down the third base line on a 1-2 count. On the bunt, the fielder tried to get the force out at third, but the ball sailed wide of the bag and allowed Reis to easily score and let Comport and McGarvey to each move up to second and third base. Pearce Harhigh drove in Comport withe a single through the left side of the infield and McGarvey scored on a ground out by Troy Salerno.

With the 4-0 lead, Gallagher fired a quick shutdown inning to keep Keuka off the board in the top of the fifth. Berks plated three runs in the bottom half, with Welk recording the only hit in the inning. Dalton Hughes, who drew a leadoff walk, eventually scored on a wild pitch. McGarvey added an RBI groundout to score Welk and Comport scored the final run on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Gallagher worked through a quick sixth inning with three ground outs around a one-out infield single. Salerno led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and Hughes added a one out hit. Salerno scored on a throwing error and Hughes came in on a single by Reis. Comport followed with an RBI double off the fence in right field and then McGarvey smashed a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left center field to cap the scoring.

Gallagher allowed just one base runner of the final three innings, ending the game on a strike out swinging and strike out looking to solidify the victory.

Reis finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Comport was 2-for-2 two with three runs scored and an RBI. Welk was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base and Harhigh was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases.

In the opener, Salerno went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Welk was 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored. Cory Fox went 1-for-3 with a run scored to become just the ninth member in program history to reach 100 career hits.

The Nittany Lions will host Wells College in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 23 at 12 p.m. Prior to the first game, Berks will honor eight of its members with Senior Day festivities.
