Women's tennis cruises to win in NEAC opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Wells College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Sunday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions improve to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in the NEAC, while the Express drop to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Caroline Bashore and Laura Youwakim opened up doubles action with an 8-2 victory at the No. 1 bout. The No. 2 duo of Kianna Anderson and Erin Ginther and No. 3 team of Lucrezia Pulcini and Brittney Mecca each won their doubles contests by an 8-1 margin.

Bashore earned a win at first singles by topping Kara Reynolds by a 6-3, 6-3 score, while Anderson was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at the second flight. Ginther (No. 3) and Youwakim (No. 4) both swept their sets 6-0, 6-0, while Pulcini won 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles. Mecca finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 victory in the sixth singles spot.

The Nittany Lions return to action with their NEAC opener against Bryn Athyn College on Wednesday, April 5 at 1 p.m. The women's tennis team will be hosting its Pink Game fundraiser on that day with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
