Softball sweeps Gallaudet in conference action

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks offense was banging on all cylinders and the pitching performances were on point as the Nittany Lions swept Gallaudet University by scores of 12-1 and 11-2 in a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contests on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions move back to .500 on the season as their record improves to 7-7 overall and they are now 3-1 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 9-14-1 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.

In the two games, the offense pounded out 19 total hits with seven going for extra bases. The Nittany Lions had two doubles, two triples, and a home run in the first game alone. The pitching combined on just eight hits allowed, while striking out 12 batters and not allowing a single walk over 10.0 total innings.

Game one pitcher Jessica Rozick sat down the first 11 batters she face in order before allowing a single with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. She finished the game with three hits allowed and surrendered just one run, while striking out nine batters and not allowing any walks. Becca Faust picked up the win in the second game with a strong performance from the pitcher's circle. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits and gave up two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and no walked batters.

Ashley Malek continued her dominance at the plate by combining to go 5-for-6 with five RBI, three runs scored and a home run. In the first game, Malek smacked a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning for the second time in two days. She went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in game one. For the season, the junior catcher is batting .465 (20-for-43) with 11 RBI and seven runs scored. Malek has recorded at least one in hit in 12 of the teams 14 games and is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak.

Jenna Heffner was 3-for-4 with two doubles, one triple, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base in the first game. Heather Rissell had one hit, one run scored and drove in two runs in the opener. Megan Olsen and Faust each recorded two hits and two runs scored in the first game.

Chelsea Bright, Malek, Kendel Reed, and Madison Newhouser all recorded two RBI in the second game. Reed and Rissell both had doubles, while Olsen and Rissell each notched a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions will host local foe Albright College in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
