Offensive outburst leads softball to sweep over LBC

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team did the bulk of its scoring in the first two innings of both games, but it was more than enough as the Nittany Lions earned a sweep over Lancaster Bible College by scores of 13-1 and 13-3 in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader at Hintz Athletic Field on Monday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions extended their season long winning streak to five consecutive games as they improve to 9-7 overall and 5-1 in the NEAC, while the Chargers fall to 6-15 on the year and 2-4 in the conference.

Berks combined on 28 hits in the two games, with Jenna Heffner finishing the day a near perfect 7-for-8 with four runs scored, eight RBI, three doubles, one triple, and a stolen base. Becca Faust combined to go 5-for-6 with five runs scored, three runs batted in, and a triple.

With the seven hits recorded by Heffner, she became the career leader in program history with 174 hits. It took the senior center fielder just 125 games to accomplish the record breaking feat.

Jessica Rozick picked up the win in the opener with 5.0 innings pitched, scattering two hits and allowing one run (unearned), while striking out eight batters. Rozick improves to 6-3 from the pitcher's circle this season with a 1.48 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 56.2 innings pitched.

Madison Newhouser went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Heffner was 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, a double, and a stolen base. Faust was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Megan Olsen went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kendel Reed, who scored twice, drove in two runs with a triple in the first inning.

Val Miller was the winning pitcher in game two after tossing a complete game with four strikeouts, while surrendering seven hits and allowing three runs. She now sits at 2-2 for year with 16 strikeouts and has a 3.36 ERA in 25.0 innings of work.

Heffner went 4-for-4 with five RBI, two runs scored, and two doubles. She matched her single-game career highs in hits, RBI, and doubles. Faust enjoyed a career-best performance at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Newhouser went 1-for-2 with a season-high three runs scored and three stolen bases. Ashley Malek had a pair of doubles and drove in three runs, while Heather Rissell finished 2-for-2 with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth for a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
