Softball sweeps Swarthmore in non-conference doubleheader

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team improved its winning streak to 13 straight games after topping Swarthmore College, 4-0 and 4-1, in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 17-7 overall, while the Garnet drop to 11-19 on the year.

Jessica Rozick tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out four in the opener. The sophomore right-hander set down the first six batters she faced, before Swarthmore led off the third inning with a double and a one-out single to put runners on the corners. Rozick worked out of the jam with a pop out to shortstop and then a pop out to third base.

In the bottom of the third, Jenna Heffner smacked a two-out triple over the left fielders head and came in to score on a single up the middle by Ashley Malek. Chelsea Bright, who got hit by a pitch, scored later in the inning when she advanced to third on a passed ball and the catcher's throw wound up in shallow left field allowing her to cruise into home.

Berks extended its lead with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kendel Reed sliced a triple down the right field line and a batter later with two outs, Madison Newhouser smashed a triple into right center to score Reed. Newhouser came in to score when a sharp grounder by Heffner was mishandled by the third baseman.

The Garnet looked poised to score a run in the top of the sixth after a leadoff bunt single and stolen base by Marit Vike. Rozick got the first out of the inning on a sacrifice bunt by the next hitter, but Vike was now on third base. Rozick got the next batter to fly out to Newhouser in left field that was too shallow for the runner to attempt to tag up. The following batter sent a blooper over the infield, but Newhouser had a strong beat on it and made the diving catch for the final out of the inning.

Heffner finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, and two stolen bases, while Reed was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Bright had a double and a scored a run, Newhouser and Malek each recorded one hit and drove in a runner during game one.

In the second game, with the exception of a run scored Val Miller put up identical numbers to Rozick. The sophomore left-hander went all 7.0 innings, with just four hits allowed and striking out four batters.

Swarthmore led off the game with a single and a stolen base, but Miller worked out of the jam and left the runner stranded at third base. In the top of the second, the Garnet went up 1-0 with an RBI double by Kalli Segel and the next batter singled to put runners on the corners with just one out. That was the last batter that would record a hit against Miller, as she forced a double play to escape the jam and retired the rest of the hitters she faced except for one, who was hit by a pitch.

Bright paced the offense with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate with one run scored. Megan Olsen and Newhouser both went 2-for-3 with a run batted in, while Carley Smith and Heffner each went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for an NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
