Softball picks up clutch doubleheader sweep over Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team rode a pair of strong pitching efforts and some timely hitting to top Penn State Abington, 5-1 and 6-2, en route to a crucial doubleheader sweep in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division action on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

Berks extended its winning streak to nine straight games and improves to 13-7 overall and 9-1 in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 11-9 on the season and 5-3 in the conference.

Jenna Heffner combined to go 5-for-6 with one triple, one stolen base, one RBI, and four runs scored in the two games. Becca Faust also enjoyed a strong day at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a run scored.

Jessica Rozick picked up the win in the pitcher's circle in game one. The sophomore right-hander went the distance with 7.0 innings pitched, scattering six hits and allowing just one run while striking out nine batters. Rozick ran into some trouble in the final inning after giving up a lead off home run and back-to-back singles to get somewhat of a rally going. She got the next batter to pop out in foul territory near the third base bag and Carley Smith got a force out at second base on the next batter. With two outs and runners on the corners, Rozick struck the final batter out looking to secure the win.

Heffner was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and stolen base and Faust finished 3-for-3 with a run scored in the opener. Ashley Malek went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Megan Olsen was 1-for-4 with a runs scored and drove in one run.

In the second game, Abington had a couple of balls bleed through the infield and fall in for hits in front of outfielders as they strung together five straight hits and pushed two runs across plate. With no one out and the bases loaded, Val Miller got a grounder to Chelsea Bright at third, who tossed home for the force out and Malek fired to first to complete the double play. Miller then escaped the inning with a slow roller to Bright.

Berks had evened the game at 2-all in the bottom of the third when a triple by Heffner scored Madison Newhouser from first base. Bright then scored Heffner with a bunt on the next play.

Miller settled in from there with a 1-2-3 second inning and just allowed one runner to get on base in each of the next three innings. In the top of the fifth with a runner on second and two outs, Miller made a run saving play on a chopper back through the middle and threw over to first for the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, Berks took advantage of two Abington errors on its way to recording four runs to grab a 6-2 lead. Kendel Reed, Heffner, and Bright all came around to score on a dropped fly off Malek's bat. Malek then scored on an RBI single up the middle by Olsen to swing the momentum fully in Berks' favor.

Abington fought back and Bree Lineman led off the top of the sixth inning with a triple to right field. The next batter had a one-hopper to Bright for out one and the following batter popped out to Reed with a fly behind second base. The next batter had a roller up the middle, but Reed made a diving stop to her left and tossed to first for the final out that left Lineman stranded at third base.

Miller recorded the first two outs of the top of the seventh with strike out looking. The next sent a liner back at Miller, which she snagged out of the air for the final out of the game. Miller improved to 3-2 in the pitcher's circle with a complete-game seven hitter, scattering seven hits and striking out two batters.

Five separate players had hits for Berks with Heffner and Heather Rissell each recording triples.

Berks will host the College of Saint Elizabeth for a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m. Prior to the first game, the Nittany Lions will host senior day festivities for Bright, Heffner, Newhouser, and Olsen.
