Softball splits with Wilson in NEAC opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 setback before salvaging the split with a 6-4 victory over Wilson College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division opener on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field.

The Nittany Lions now sit at 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the NEAC South, while the Phoenix are 6-8 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.

In the opener, Jessica Rozick allowed an unearned run in the first inning which accounted for the only run of the game. The sophomore right-hander scattered five hits and recorded a season-best 11 strikeouts.

Madison Newhouser led the offensive by going 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Chelsea Bright, Ashley Malek, and Carley Smith also recorded singles in the game.

In the second game, Berks worked out of its scoring funk with three runs in the first inning and a solo run in the second. The Phoenix put up a three-spot in the top of the third inning, but Berks added another run to build a 5-3 lead. The teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning and the Nittany Lions held on down the stretch to earn the win.

Val Miller pitched 4.1 innings from the pitcher's circle en route to her first win of the season. The sophomore left-hander scattered seven hits and allowed four runs, while striking out one batter. Rozick fired 2.2 innings of shutout relief to earn her first save of the season and second of her career. She allowed just two bases runners and struck out two batters to earn the save.

Malek got the offense rolling with a two-run home run to center field in the first inning. The junior catcher finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Smith added two hits, including a double, with one RBI and one run scored, while Kendel Reed went 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, one RBI, and one run scored. Becca Faust, Megan Olsen, and Heather Rissell all had one hit and drove in a run.

The softball team joined up with the baseball squad to host their annual Pink Game fundraisers this afternoon, with all donations benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a conference doubleheader against Gallaudet University on Sunday, April 2 at 12 p.m.
