Softball on both ends of walk off finishes on final day in Florida

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team celebrated the joys of a walk-off win with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Lakeland University, but they were on the wrong end of a 4-3 extra inning triumph by Aurora University in the night cap on Thursday afternoon. The Nittany Lions finish their first trip to the Rebel Spring Games with a record of 4-4.

In the opener, Berks trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Becca Faust led off the inning with a single, Megan Olsen followed with a walk and Morgan Omlor executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. After an infield fly out, the Muskies (5-6) were one out away from sealing the victory. But Jenna Heffner had a change of plans in mind as she ripped a double to plate both runners and give Berks a thrilling one-run victory.

Lakeland scored an unearned run in the top of the first, but Berks tied it in their half of the second inning. Heather Rissell had a one-out double and came around to score after a Muskies error a batter later.

Jessica Rozick, who went 1-for-3 out of the leadoff spot, fired a complete-game to earn the win in the pitcher's circle. The sophomore right-hander scattered four hits and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out a season-high 10 batters. Rozick finished off the spring trip 4-1 in the circle with four complete-games, one shutout, 38 strikeouts, and a 2.26 ERA in 31.0 innings pitched.

Both teams came out strong in the second game, with Berks plating two runs and Aurora countering with a 3-spot in the bottom half of the first.

Rozick reached first on an error to lead off the game and Heffner followed with her first triple of the season to score the Nittany Lions first run. Two batters later Kendel Reed singled home Heffner to go up 2-0.

The Spartans (5-2) had Berks down to their final out in the seventh inning, but a single by Ashley Malek scored Val Miller to knot the game at 3-all. Miller then tossed a perfect frame in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extras. With a runner placed on second base for international tie-break rules, the Nittany Lions were unable to move the runner up and were held scoreless in the top of the eighth. Aurora's lead off batter got the sac bunt down to move the runner to third base. Berks elected to walk the bases load in hopes of getting a force at home or an inning ending double play. But the Spartans were able to get a fly ball deep enough to score the runner from third base with a sacrifice fly.

Reed finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Olsen went 2-for-3. Miller threw a season-high 7 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and striking out four batters.

The Nittany Lions will return to action with a non-conference doubleheader at Rosemont College on Saturday, March 18 at 1 p.m.
