Softball drops a pair of non-conference games at Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team was back in game action for the first time in 20 days after several postponements and cancelations over the last few weeks with a pair of games against crosstown rival Alvernia University on Wednesday afternoon, with the Crusaders winning by scores of 1-0 and 6-1 at Angelica Park.

The lone run in the first game came from a hit batter with bases loaded. The Nittany Lions outhit Alvernia by a 5-4 margin, but were unable to get a timely hit to put a run across the plate.

Jessica Rozick allowed just four hits and one run, while striking out seven batters. Carley Smith led the offense with two hits, while Jenna Heffner, Ashley Malek, and Becca Faust each recorded one hit.

In the second game, the Nittany Lions again had trouble stringing together hits to find runs. Rozick finished the game 2-for-3, while Heffner went 2-for-4 with a triple. Carley Smith went 1-for-3 with a double and had an RBI, while Malek was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Faust pitched 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits and six runs (five earned), while striking out three batters.

The Nittany Lions get into league play with a pair of NEAC South Division contests this weekend. They will host Wilson College on Saturday, April 1 at 1 p.m. and Gallaudet University on Sunday, April 2 at 12 p.m. On Saturday, the softball and baseball teams will host their annual Pink Game fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
