Softball splits on third day of spring break trip

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the morning with an 11-1 victory over Beloit College,but were limited to a split on the day after falling 3-0 to Montclair State University on the third day at the Rebel Spring Games.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions (3-3) plated two runs in the bottom of the first, followed by four in the second and finished off the scoring with five in the third inning.

Four different players each recorded two hits and scored two runs, while three players racked up two or more runs batted in. Jenna Heffner led the offense, going 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, four RBI, and a walk. Kendel Reed went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI, a triple, and a stolen base, while Becca Faust was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Starting pitcher Jessica Rozick helped her own cause at the plate by going 2-for-2 with one run batted in, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Ashley Malek had one hit and drove in two runs, while Morgan Omlor was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a runs scored.

Rozick picked up the win with three scoreless innings pitched. She allowed just two hits, while striking out six batters. Val Miller struck out three batters in two innings of relief. The freshman left-hander allowed just one hit and surrended one unearned run.

In the second game, Rozick scattered six hits and gave up three runs (two earned), while striking out seven batters.

Reed, Carley Smith, and Faust recorded the three hits for Berks.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring break trip with games on Thursday, March 9 against Lakeland University (11:15 am) and Aurora University (1:30 pm).
