Softball caps off split with shutout win over Altoona

KISSIMMEE, FL -  The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a 3-1 heartbreaker to Thomas More College before bouncing back with a 5-0 victory over Penn State Altoona to salvage a split on the second day of the Rebel Spring Games on Monday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (2-2) received a strong debut from Val Miller in the pitcher's circle in the opener. The sophomore left-hander scattered eight hits and allowed two runs, while striking out four batters in six innings of work. At the plate, Madison Newhouser went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Kendel Reed and Jenna Heffner each were 1-for-3. Heffner notched the lone RBI for the Nittany Lions.

Berks recorded its first shutout of the season with the 5-0 win over Penn State Altoona. The game remained pretty balanced, but Berks was powered by a five-run third inning in which they took advantage of five hits and two errors.

Jessica Rozick, who earned the win in the circle, got the offense going with a base knock in the first at-bat of her collegiate career. An error by Altoona on a sacrifice bunt by Reed put runners on first and second with nobody out. Heffner made them pay with her first triple of the season to plate both Rozick and Reed and give Berks an early 2-0 advantage. Ashley Malek followed with a single that scored Heffner. Becca Faust finished off the scoring with a single that scored both Malek and Megan Olsen.

Malek led the offensive attack by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Heffner and Faust both recorded two runs batted in. After just four games played, Heffner has already recorded seven RBI.

Rozick picked up her second win of the season with her complete-game effort. The sophomore right-hander allowed four hits and issued three walks, while striking out eight batters. Rozick held Altoona to just two players in scoring position all game, a runner on second in the first inning and a person on third in the fifth inning. She retired the hitters in order in the fourth and again in the bottom of the seventh.

The Nittany Lions will enjoy a day off on Tuesday before returning to action on Wednesday, March 8 against Beloit College (9 a.m.) and Montclair State University (11:15 am).
