Softball opens season with split at Rebel Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the 2017 season with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Bluffton University, before falling 10-1 to Kean University in the second game of the day on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-1) are making their first ever spring break trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Florida. In the opener against the Beavers (1-1), Berks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Bluffton responded with a four-run fifth inning to go ahead 4-3. The Nittany Lions then put up a four-spot of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to pull ahead 7-4. The Beavers tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth make the score 7-6 in Berks' favor. Clinging to the one-run lead, pitcher JESSICA ROZICKJessica Rozick secured the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning capped off by sixth strikeout of the day.

At the plate, Jenna Heffner was 2-for-3 with four RBI, one run scored, one stolen base, and one walk. Ashley Malek, Megan Olsen, and Carley Smith all notched two hits, with Olsen driving in a run and Smith scoring once. Madison Newhouser and Chelsea Bright both scored two runs and each added a hit. Heather Rissell went 1-for-1 with a run scored and a career-high three walks.

In the second game of the day, Morgan Omlor notched an RBI single to score Newhouser.

The Nittany Lions continue their spring break trip with games against Thomas More College (11:15 am) and Penn State Altoona (1:30 pm) on Monday, March 6.
