Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Waples, MBB rally comes up just short against Bryn Athyn

READING, PA - In similar fashion to the past handful of games, the Penn State Berks men's basketball suffered a single-possession heartbreaking defeat. In the most recent setback, the Nittany Lions battled back from a 10-point deficit in the final 3:30 of action, but could not get the game-tying basket to drop at the buzzer in an 85-72 loss to Bryn Athyn College in Wednesday evening's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest.

Baba Waples came on hot in the second half and finished with a game-high 34 points, which moved him into second place on the all-time scoring list at Berks with 1312 points to trail leader Tom Smith (1337) by just 25 points. Waples tallied 25 points of those points in the second half, 11 of which came during the rally in the final three minutes of action. In that time, Waples hit three of his four 3-pointers, the most thrilling coming when he picked up an offensive rebound in the corner and drilled a turn around 3 to make it a two point game with 15 seconds left.

On the ensuing possession, Eli Adams and Darren Major tied up the Bryn Athyn dribbler to force a jump ball, unfortunately for Berks it was in Bryn Athyn's favor. The Lions (9-11, 7-8 NEAC) then got the ball across mid-court and the Nittany Lions fouled and put Christian Rivera on the line with 6.8. Rivera made the first to give Bryn Athyn a three-point lead and the second shot rimmed out, where Joel Ellison rebounded and quickly sent an outlet pass to Waples. With no timeouts left, Waples dribbled down the court, slowly checking the time on the clock as he crossed half court, and got off a 3 from the left wing as time expired. The ball appeared to be right on target, but sailed a little far and slammed off the far side of the rim and to the floor.

Ellison turned in another solid shooting performance, going 7-of-10 from the floor to finish with 14 points. In addition, the senior forward tallied nine rebounds and three assists. Ellison moved into sole possession of third place in career rebounds after raising his total to 453. Major chipped in 13 points, six boards, and two steals, while Nelson Hine added eight points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and five assists. Matt Thompson finished with six points, followed by Adams with five.

Troy Steed led Bryn Athyn with 17 points, all of which came after the halftime intermission, and eight rebounds. Rahim Washingotn tallied 14 points and Christian Rivera had 12.

The men's squad teamed up with the women's squad to host their annual "Pink Game" fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. The teams both wore pink t-shirts during warm-ups and accepted donations at the door and held a shooting contest at halftime of each game. The teams combined to raise $262.00, all of which goes toward the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday, February 11 at 3 p.m.
