Golden nets a pair of goals to send Nittany Lions to NEAC Title game

READING, PA - Caitlin Golden recorded a pair of goals to lead the Penn State Berks women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Bryn Athyn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Semifinal round contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (14-5-1) will sixth straight appearance in the NEAC Championship when they face off with Penn College on Sunday afternoon.

Golden netted the first goal of the contest when she collected a loose ball and chipped a shot into the far, back corner in the 3:07 mark of the opening period.

With the Bryn Athyn defense stacked in the box, the Nittany Lions were not able to score the rest of the first half to take a 1-0 advantage into the break. The Lions kept Berks off the board well into the second half, until a failed clear attempt by Bryn Athyn was collected by Golden in the 83rd minute. The junior forward then beat the keeper into the far corner to tally her 24 goal of the season and give the Nittany Lions an insurance goal down the stretch.

The Nittany Lions controlled possession in their offensive third for the bulk of the contest, en route to outshooting Bryn Athyn by a 37-0 margin. Julia Green had a strong scoring opportunity early in the second half, but her shot sailed just wide of the net. Megan Jardine and Jennifer Martin also had a couple of shots turned away by Allie Warren, who finished the match with 17 saves. Paige Elmy picked up the win in net for Berks, which was her 14 win and fourth shutout of the season.

Penn College earned a thrilling win over SUNY Polytechnic in the later game to earn the women's soccer programs first trip to the NEAC title game. Penn College scored early in the second half to tie the game and neither team could break the deadlock throughout regulation or either overtime frames. In the shootout, Penn College outlasted SUNY Poly by a score of 4-3. Penn College also won by shootout in a quarterfinal victory over Keuka College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College on Sunday, November 5 at 2 p.m. with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
