Women's basketball tops Abington on the road

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team picked up a hard earned victory, 80-77, on the road at Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest on Saturday afternoon.

Berks (2-5, 2-3 NEAC) held a 24-19 advantage after the first period and did not trail throughout the entire second quarter to take a 40-34 lead into the halftime break. The teams exchanged leads during the third period before Berks came out ahead 59-56 heading into the final quarter.

Abington (4-5, 2-3 NEAC) evened up the game at 59-all with a 3-pointer to start off the quarter. Abington matched its largest lead of the game when they went ahead 71-67 with 5:45 left to play. Deanna Daddona responded with a clutch 3-pointer to slice the deficit to one point and a layup by Sam Huggins put Berks ahead 72-71 with 3:05 to play. Berks clung to that lead the rest of the way with a huge 3-pointer by Mackenzie Huber and five points by Sam Brensinger down the stretch.

The trio of Daddona, Brensinger, and Huggins played all 40 minutes of the game and combined for 69 points, 37 rebounds, seven assists, and eight steals. Daddona finished with a season-high and team-best 29 points, followed by Brensinger with 26 points, which matched her career-high. Huggins notched her fourth double-double of the season after recording 14 points and a contest-high 24 rebounds. The 24 boards are tied for the sixth most in a single-game in program history.

Berks won the battle of the boards by a 58-47 margin. Huggins led with her 24, while Daddona grabbed seven and Brensinger and Huber each had six. Daddona, Brensinger, and Huber all handed out three assists.

For the second time in her career, Daddona finished 15-for-16 at the free throw line. The 15 free throws made are tied for the second most free throws made in a single-game. As a team, the Nittany Lions converted 23-of-29 trips for a 79.3% at the foul line. Brensinger had a team-high three 3-pointers made, while Daddona and Huber each hit two from beyond the arc.

Abington was paced on offense by Shayna Rodriguez, who connected on four 3-pointers to finish with a contest-best 32 points. She also added eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Symantha Marrero added 18 points and 10 boards, while Brittany Keyes chipped in 12 points.

Berks returns to action with a home conference tilt against the College of Saint Elizabeth on Tuesday, January 10 at 6 p.m.
