Men's tennis tops Alvernia, 7-2

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over visiting Alvernia University in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions improved to 1-1 on the season, while the Crusaders suffered their first defeat to fall to 2-1.

Berks claimed two of the three doubles points to jump out to an early lead. The duo of Will Byler and Diego Olazagasti outlast Luke Hangen and Reid Hoff to take the No. 1 doubles bout by an 8-6 margin. The No. 3 pair of Mostafa Rahmy and Nick Volk were 8-4 winners. Ryan Fritz and Dylan Deleon overcame an early deficit, but could not rally all the way back as they fell, 8-6, in the second spot.

Fritz redeemed himself in singles action, where he cruised to a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight. Angel Negron then earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while Olazagasti had a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in the fourth spot and Volk won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. At the No. 6 match, Deleon won the tiebreaker 7-1 to pick up a 7-6 win in the first set and he followed it up with a 6-3 win in set two to claim the victory.

The Nittany Lions will conclude the fall portion of their schedule with an away match at Cabrini College on Thursday, October 6 at 3 p.m.
