Women's tennis tops Albright in opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team opened up its 2016-17 season with a 6-3 victory over crosstown rival Albright College in a non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions (1-0) jumped out to an early lead by winning the second and third doubles bouts. The No. 2 tandem of Erin Ginther and Kianna Anderson grabbed an 8-1 win, while Tessa Caltagirone and Lu Pulcini earned an 8-4 victory out of the third spot.

In singles action, the bottom four players in the lineup came through with wins to clinch the match for Berks. Ginther (No. 3) and Pulcini each won their matches by scores of 6-0, 6-3, while Caltagirone cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win at sixth singles. Laura Youwakim picked up a thrilling comeback win at No. 4 singles with a score of 5-7, 7-5, 10-4.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Rosemont College for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, October 4 at 3:30 p.m.
