Softball game with Keuka suspended due to darkness

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team started the day off with a 7-3 win over Penn State Abington in the opening round and then had its contest later in the afternoon against Keuka College suspended due to darkness with the game tied 2-all entering the top of the eighth inning at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions offense was limited all game and were trailing by two runs while down to their final out of the game. With runners on first and second, Megan Olsen delivered a base hit to left center field that easily scored Natalie Babik from second base. Jenna Heffner, who singled earlier in the inning, was determined to score the tying run as she raced around the bases from first to home on the single in the gap.

Jessica Rozick set the Wolfpack down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game was then halted due to darkness.

When the game resumes tomorrow morning, the Nittany Lions will be up to bat with Kendel Reed due at the plate. Missy Lamm will be placed on second base with the international tie-break rules coming into play.

The winner of this game will be in the drivers seat as they will go to the championship game and will need to be beaten twice. The loser will face the winner of Penn State Abington/Wilson College in an elimination game around 12 p.m.

Berks (31-3) pounded out 14 hits, with a single-game school record seven doubles. They scored four times in the bottom of the third inning to build an early 4-0 lead. Abington responded with a run in the top of the fourth, but Berks countered with two runs in their half of the inning to extend the lead to 6-1. The visitor's then added two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-3, but Berks responded with one run in the bottom half to take a four-run lead into the final inning. Jessica Rozick closed out the game with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning to seal the win.

Megan Olsen and Missy Lamm paced the Nittany Lions offense, as each went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Olsen added three RBI and scored two runs, while Lamm scored once and had a stolen base. Jenna Heffner was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Chelsea Bright (2-for-4) got the offense rolling in the four run fourth inning with a leadoff double and came into score when Heffner followed with a double of her own. Natalie Babik and Kendel Reed both had a hit and drove in a run, while Heather Rissell recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Rozick scattered seven hits and allowed three runs, while striking out four batters in another complete game effort as she improves to 15-1 on the season.

The Nittany Lions will face the winner of host Keuka College (No. 1, North) and Wilson College (No. 2, South) at 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
