Softball edged by Keuka in NEAC title game

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team was edged, 6-4, by Keuka College in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship on Sunday afternoon at Jephson Athletic Complex. Earlier in the day, the Nittany Lions defeated Penn State Abington by a score of 12-6 to advance to the title game against the top-seed Wolfpack.

GAME ONE (PENN STATE ABINGTON)
In the opener, Berks used a six-run second inning to build an early 8-3 lead, but Abington countered with three in the top of the third to make it an 8-6 game. Berks then pulled away with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, and Becca Faust shut down the Abington offense the rest off the way to earn the win. Faust tossed a complete-game, allowing six runs (three earned), while striking out seven batters.

The Nittany Lions (32-5) pounded out 14 hits, while all nine batters in the order recorded at least one hit. Jenna Heffner finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI, four runs scored, a triple, and a home run. Ashley Malek also had a monster game, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, and runs scored. Missy Lamm added a hit and drove in two runs, while Chelsea Bright was 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Megan Olsen went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and scored a run.

GAME TWO (KEUKA)
The Wolfpack, who entered the game needing to be defeated twice, jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after their first at bat of the game. Bright single to right center to score Natalie Babik and Heather Rissell to even up the game at 2-all in the top of second inning. Keuka pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third, but Berks cut its deficit in half with a two-run homer by Heffner in the top of the fourth. But that is as close as Berks would get as they were only able to get one base runner in the final three innings.

Bright went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Heffner finished 2-for-4  with two RBI and a run scored. Lamm also chipped in two hits for the Nittany Lions.

Over the four games of the tournament, Heffner went 8-for-14 with eight runs scored, seven RBI, one double, one triple, and two homers. She raised her average to .462, which is the fourth best in program history.
