Baseball season draws to an end in Mid-Atlantic Regional

MOOSIC, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team saw its phenomenal 2016 season draw to a close after suffering a 7-4 setback to Kean University at the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional at PNC as the game went into the early hours of Saturday morning.

Berks found itself in a 3-0 hole after the first inning and were down 7-0 after the top of the fifth inning. But as has been the case all year, the Nittany Lions did not give up and they battled until the very end. Down the stretch they chipped away at the deficit, with three runs in the sixth, one more in the seventh to trail by a score of 7-4. In the bottom of the ninth inning, senior Tom Grablewski kept his career alive with a two out single to bring the tying run to the plate, but closer Vinny Sanfordino was able to force a game ending pop out to secure the save.

Andrew Hertzog turned in his finest performance of the season on the mound to keep the Nittany Lions in contention. The sophomore right-hander tossed 4.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing only four hits. Tyler Comport, who converted to pitcher midway through the season, had four strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.

The heart of the order came through clutch for the Nittany Lions offense with Grablewski, John McGarvey, Toby Welk, and Dalton Hughes recording two hits apiece and combining for three runs scored and three RBI. Nick Zipay was 1-for-4 with a run scored and threw out two runners attempting to steal from behind the plate.

The Nittany Lions will bid farewell to a group of seniors (Alex Doyle, Keeanu Erb, Luke Erb, Grablewski, and Zipay) that achieved much success and accomplished many of goals to proudly hold their heads up high about. In the past four years, those seniors have combined for 78 wins during their time with the blue-and-white, while also recording two NEAC Tournament titles, and three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The seniors, along with the rest of the 2016 squad, battled from the first pitch of the season opener until the final out of their game with Kean. The Nittany Lions finish the 2016 campaign with an overall record of 24-13 as they set the school record for wins in a season, winning percentage (.649), and went the furthest into the NCAA Tournament in program history. For the second year in a row they took down the top seed of the regional tournament and with a thrilling win earlier on Friday they recorded another victory over a nationally ranked opponent.
