Baseball falls to UMass-Boston in regional tournament

MOOSIC, PA - One rough inning proved to be too much for the Penn State Berks baseball team to overcome as they suffered a 10-5 setback to the University of Massachusetts Boston in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament on Thursday afternoon at PNC Field.

The Nittany Lions (23-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three and a half innings, but in the bottom of the fourth inning the Beacons scored eight runs on four hits, four walks, two Berks errors as 13 batters were sent to the plate.

Tom Grablewski lead the Nittany Lions offense, going 3-for-4 with one double, one run scored, and a sacrifice bunt. For the second day in a row, John McGarvey came through clutch as he drove in two runs with an RBI double down the right field line to cut the score to 9-5 in the top of the seventh inning. Keeanu Erb finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI, run scored, and a double, while Cory Fox and Nick Zipay each had a hit and a run scored.

Andrew Hertzog tossed 4 1/3 innings of relieve, scattering six hits and allowing two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts.

The Nittany Lions will face Salisbury University in an elimination game on Friday, May 20 at 10 a.m.
