Softball sweeps St. Elizabeth in conference opener

READING, PA - Jessica Rozick tossed a no-hitter and Abby Staskiel turned in a complete-game to help lead the Penn State Berks softball team to a sweep over the College of Saint Elizabeth in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the opener 8-0, before winning the second game of the twinbill by a 5-1 margin.

Berks, who has won six straight, improves to 12-3 on the season and 2-0 in the NEAC, while the Eagles fall to 8-11 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

GAME 1

Rozick was on top of her game with 10 strikeouts en rout to the first no-hitter of her career. The freshman right-hander faced the minimum amount of batters and her only blemish was a walk to the leadoff batter in the top of the fifth inning, who was caught stealing on a strikeout. Rozick only allowed two balls to the outfield, both of which were caught by Heather Rissell in shallow right field. Rozick improves to 5-1 on the season with a 0.91 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 46.0 innings of work. She has also compiled six complete-games and has tossed back-to-back shutouts.

Ashley Malek smashed a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to reach the 8-run rule. Megan Olsen got the Nittany Lions on the board with a bases clearing double for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Two more runs came home later in the inning when the left fielder could not handle a deep fly down the line by Mackenzie Huber.

Becky Webster and Chelsea Bright each had a hit and scored a run, with Bright also adding a stolen base. Jenna Heffner went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Kendel Reed added a double.

GAME 2

Staskiel scattered five hits and allowed on unearned run in her seven innings of work. The senior right-hander struck out three batters and issued only one walk. In the third inning, the Eagles had runners on first and second with just one out, but Staskiel worked out of the jam with a ground out and a fly to center. St. Elizabeth put their first two batters on in the top of next inning, but again Staskiel escaped trouble with a strikeout and a pair of ground outs. Staskiel improves to 3-1 on the season and picked up her third complete game.

The lone run of the game for the Eagles came in the top of the first, but the Nittany Lions countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Heffner had a one-out double to right center and Malek followed with a single to put runners on the corners. On the next batter Malek stole second base and Heffner then stole home as the catcher's throw was going to second base.

Carolyn Degurski put Berks up 2-1 with an RBI triple in the bottom of the second to score Huber, who singled earlier in the inning. The Nittany Lions tacked on another run in the inning off of an error. Berks finished off its scoring with a sacrifice fly by Malek and an RBI double from Rissell in the bottom of the fifth.

Hefner finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Degurski went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will continue conference play with a doubleheader at Penn State Abington on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 1 p.m.
