Softball closes out regular season with sweep of Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team capped off the regular season with a sweep of Wilson College, 9-1 and 7-3, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions, who extended their win streak to 24 straight, improve to 30-3 on the season and finished off a perfect run through the NEAC South Division for a record of 20-0, while the Phoenix move to 18-15 for the season and 10-6 in the conference. This is just the second time in program-history that the Nittany Lions have reached the 30-win plateau and marks the first time a team in the south division had a perfect record in the regular season since Wilson in 2012.

GAME ONE
Jessica Rozick, coming off of a perfect game on Friday afternoon, ran into some trouble in the opening inning. She hit the first batter in the order, the second batter reached on an error, and the third batter had an infield single to load the bases. The freshman right-hander then got a strikeout of the cleanup hitter, but the next batter drew a walk to force in the first run of the game. Rozick then settled in with a fly out to center and strikeout to leave the bases stranded.

Rozick then set the batters down in order in three of the next four innings, while the offense was able to put up nine runs in that time. Rozick let up a single to the leadoff batter in the bottom of the sixth, but forced three flies to the outfield to get out of it and end the game due to the mercy rule. She scattered two hits and allowed just one run, while striking out eight batters. Rozick is now 14-1 on the season with a 0.89 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 102 1/3 innings pitched. She leads the conference in wins (14), complete games (15), shutouts (7), strikeouts (136), and batting average against (.166).

The Nittany Lions pounded out 11 hits as every batter in the lineup recorded at least one hit. Ashley Malek, Megan Olsen, and Heather Rissell all went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in, with Rissell also adding a double and two runs runs scored. Abby Staskiel was 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored, while Jenna Heffner was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Carolyn Degurski was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Missy Lamm added a hit, run, and an RBI.

GAME TWO
Staskiel went the distance with a seven inning complete game. She scattered 11 hits and allowed three runs, while striking out three. The senior right-hander kept the Phoenix off the board through the first three innings, but the home team broke through for a run in the fourth to trail Berks, 4-1. Wilson plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 7-3 game, but Staskiel shut down the rally with a strikeout to seal the win. She improves to 5-1 on the season with four complete games and a 5.00 ERA in 28 innings of work.

Degurski stayed hot at the plate by going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Kendel Reed went 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Rissell added two hits, an RBI, and a run scored, while Heffner and Lamm both recorded doubles.

The Nittany Lions will wait for the official announcement from the conference office on the location, date, and opponent of the NEAC Tournament. Please check back later for more details on the postseason tournament.
