Softball takes two on the road from Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team continued on its winning ways with a sweep of Gallaudet University with an 11-0 in game one victory hat saw several individual accomplishments achieved, followed by a wild 9-6 win in eight innings in the nightcap of a NEAC doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 28-3 on the season and 18-0 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 9-17 overall and 3-15 in the conference.

GAME ONE
Jessica Rozick fired her first perfect-game of the season (third no-hitter) after sitting down all 15 Bison batters down in order. The freshman right-hander recorded five strikeouts to run her total up to a single-season school record 128 strikeouts. Rozick improves to 13-1 on the season with her seventh shutout and lowered her ERA to 0.87.

Jenna Heffner finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and became the first player in program history to hit for the cycle. The junior outfielder singled in her first at-bat, smacked a two-run homer over the right field fence in the second inning, doubled in the top of the third, and stroked a triple to center field in the top of the fifth inning.

Ashley Malek also turned in a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. The sophomore ripped her team-high fifth home run of the season in the top of the fifth inning. She also collected two runs scored and two RBI.

Kendel Reed went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs scored and an RBI, while Becky Webster had one hit and drove in three runs. Heather Rissell added a double and scored twice.

GAME TWO
The second game did not go as smoothly for the Nittany Lions. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead after their first at bat, but the Bison knotted up in their half of the inning. Berks then added two runs in the top of the seventh, but Gallaudet matched them to send the game into extras. Berks put six runs across in the top of the eighth, but the Bison added three of their own and had the bases loaded with two outs. Rozick then entered the game and got a strikeout on the only batter she faced to record the first save of her career. Abby Staskiel struck out one batter in an inning of relief to earn the win and improve to 4-1 on the season.

Carolyn Degurski was 2-for-3 with a double, three runs batted in, and a runs scored. Megan Olsen had one hit and drove in two runs, while Natalie Babik was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Malek went 1-for-4 with a triple, and RBI, and a runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will finish off its regular season with a NEAC doubleheader at Wilson College on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m.
