Men's and women's tennis fall to Abington in regular season finale

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's tennis and women's tennis team both fell, 6-3, to Penn State Abington in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Court.

The men's squad now has a record of 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the NAC to finish second place in the standings, while Abington is 8-6 for the season and finish in first place in the conference with a 5-0 record.

Berks jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles action, led by the No. 1 team of Drew Weinhold and Will Byler with an 8-4 victory. Angel Negron and Nick Volk claimed a close one at third doubles, winning 8-7 after taking the tie-breaker 7-5.

Abington rebounded with wins in five of the six singles bouts. Byler at the second flight by a score of 6-3, 6-3 for Berks' lone singles victory.

The Berks women close out the regular season 6-8 overall and 6-1 in the NEAC to finish runner-up in the standings to Abington, who improved to 11-4 for the season and 7-0 in the conference.

Abington bolted out to a 3-0 lead after posting a win in each of the doubles matches and they clinched the victory by taking the top three singles matches.

Caroline Bashore was a 6-2, 61 winner at fourth singles, while Cassidy Schultz won 6-2, 6-0 in fifth singles. Erin Ginther rounded out the winners by taking her No. 6 bout by a score of 6-4, 6-0.

Both the tennis squads teamed up with baseball and softball to host their annual spring Pink Games on Saturday afternoon. The teams combined to raise $232.79 to help benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The women's tennis team will face Wells College in the semifinal round of the NEAC Tournament on Wednesday, April 27 at 6 p.m. The men's team will face Lancaster Bible College on Friday, April 29 at 6 p.m.
